How Conquering Distractions Can Help Make You A Better Person.


Distractions! Every single person that is breathing will deal with distractions throughout the run of a day. Distractions are something that is practically impossible to escape from. If you take a moment and think about the amount of things that the average person does in the run of a day, it really isn't that hard to imagine how easy it is for a person to become distracted. Add in the idea that distractions can come in many different forms, and you have a recipe for a world that is filled with scatterbrain individuals. Now I do not have any scientific evidence to back up what I'm about to say, but I think that most people would agree with my sentiment here. I believe that a person that less distracted is a more focused person. Most of us would agree with that, right? The truth is that while distractions is something that we all face, there are levels as to how distracted an individual can become. In other words, there are some people that are going to be more focused than others due to their ability to minimize distractions in their lives. For a person that has a life filled with distractions, overcoming those distractions will likely be a daunting challenge to undertake. However, I believe that anyone that is willing to at least climb in the ring and battle with their distractions can make great strides towards conquering their distractions. I believe that by conquering our distractions, we can greatly improve ourselves as individuals. 


What's going on good people? I am Brad H., and I would like to welcome you all to another installment of 'Brad H.'s Perspective'! I am here to hopefully provide some inspiration that could be helpful towards us staying motivated in our lives. I hope you all have been doing well since we began this new year of 2022. To be perfectly honest with you all, the new year hasn't gotten off to the best of start for me personally. I started out the year telling myself that I would work hard to conquer certain habits that I feel hindered me last year. I started out doing pretty well for a couple of weeks, and then ultimately ended up falling back into them. In saying this, there are two things I'd like to point out before we get into this week's topic. First off, if you've fallen short of any goals that you've set for yourself this year, you are not a failure. The year is still new, and everyday you wake up breathing is an opportunity to improve. Secondly, a date changing on a calendar doesn't guarantee that things will change for you. It takes effort on our part first and foremost, but we also need circumstances to work out in our favor. Those are a couple of points that I wanted to make here on my soapbox before we go into this week's main topic. Again, I hope that you all have been doing well, so now lets get into how conquering distractions can help us to become better people. 


Now what are distractions? We all have our own individual definitions of what distractions are, but the official definition that I found is "a thing that prevents someone from giving full attention to something else". I would say that is a pretty standard and straightforward way to describe distractions. Now what stands out for e personally with that definition is that they are referred to as "a thing". This is a very generalized way of describing it, which means what exactly? Ah yes, it means that ANYTHING can be classified as being a distraction. Since anything can be a distraction to us, it isn't very hard to imagine how hard it is for us as people to be focused. Furthermore, it is important for us as individuals to be able to pinpoint the things that are distractions for us. I point this out all the time in these topics, but we are all different when it comes to what and how certain things affect us. There are much deeper levels to this topic that could be expounded upon, and I'd probably be able to write a novel about it. However, for the sake of keeping this topic much shorter, I felt it necessary to point out that levels do exist. In order to conquer your distractions and take that first step towards hopefully becoming a better person, we have to be able to identify our individual distractions. 


Now that we've established that the individual distractions in our lives need to be identified first, how exactly do we defeat these distractions out of our lives? To be frank with you all, I honestly don't know how to completely eradicate distractions. I'm not even entirely sure that distractions can completely be defeated, but what I do know if that though some things cannot be eradicated completely, there are ways to improve. From my own perspective, I believe that one of the best ways to improve upon distractions begins with setting goals for yourself. I know that the word goals is very general, but we have to remember that everyone has different goals for themselves. Setting goals for ourselves gives us an added meaning for wanting to achieve something. If you set a goal for yourself that is reasonable and achievable, it can help towards keeping your mind locked in on what you're trying to achieve. If you're mentally locked in on your goal, it is much easier to not be distracted. I also want to point out that removing the distractions that you're aware of can be helpful towards conquering them. If you know that your phone for example is a distraction when you're studying or something of that nature, you can put your phone in another room to avoid be distracted by it. This is just one example of many, but the important thing is to identify your distractions first. Secondly, be realistic about your expectations of conquering your distractions. 


We've touched on the importance of identifying our individual distractions, and we've talked about setting realistic goals toward helping to defeat distractions. So how does conquering our distractions help us to become better people? To begin with from my perspective, anything that has a hold on you that you try weaning yourself from is going to help you become mentally stronger. However, I believe the biggest benefit that comes from eliminating distractions is added focus and mental clarity. One of the sayings that I heard a guy say a couple of years back was that a focused person is a dangerous person. Not a dangerous person from the perspective of meaning others harm, but dangerous from the perspective of the lack of focus among people in this world. I believe that a person that is focused and has minimized distractions in their life is going to have an edge that most people do not. I believe that this is ultimately why conquering your distractions can help towards making you a better person. Now as I pointed out earlier, this is not an easy battle to win. Distractions are everywhere, which means it is very difficult to totally defeat them. However, as I stated earlier, improvement is always better than no improvement. Keep in mind that sometimes winning the small battles is how the war is ultimately won, and that may be the key towards conquering our distractions.
